Adding and Editing People in PhpGedView

Once you've uploaded or created your family tree in PhpGedView, you can now start adding or editing individuals and families within your family tree.  PhpGedView makes this easy.

In this tutorial, we'll show you how to edit an existing person in PhpGedView, and we'll also show you how to add a new person and link them into your family tree.  Remember that since PhpGedView is web based, you can have multiple people adding or editing records at the same time.

Editing People
If you've created a new family tree (Gedcom) with PhpGedView, you'll notice that it created the first person for you named "Given Names Surname".  You'll want to go in and edit this individual so that you have a good starting point.

To edit a person, you can use the "Charts" interface to find them in your family tree, or you can use the search box to search for them.  Once you've found them, click on their name to view their "individual" page.  From this page, you can update various information on the person.  To change basic information, find the box labeled "Options for individual" and click on the "Edit" icon.  This will bring up the Quick Edit window where you can update most of the basic information on the person.  You can also add Notes, Sources and Media using the various tabs.

Adding a New Person
Adding a new person to PhpGedView is done by adding them as a relative to an existing person.  Navigate to the relative's "individual" page using the search box or the charts and click on the "Close Relatives" tab.  From this page, you have the following options available:

  • Add a new father
  • Add a new mother
  • Link this person to an existing family as a child
  • Add a new wife
  • Add a wife using an existing person
  • Link this person to an existing family as a husband
  • Add a child to create a one-parent family
  • Link remote person

Select the appropriate option to add the new person.  Depending on the option you choose, some of the person's information will already be filled in for you.

Adding an unlinked individual
There may be times when you want to add an individual to the Family Tree in PhpGedView when you don't have sufficient information to tie them to a relative.  In this case, as an administrator on the site, you can add an "Unlinked Person".  You do this by moving your mouse over the "MyGedView Portal" icon and choosing "Admin".  Next, find the link that says "Add and unlinked person".  Once you've added an unlinked person, you can later connect them to the rest of your family tree once you are able to.

The "Family" record
Whenever you add a wife or a husband to a person, PhpGedView will automatically create a "Family" record for you.  You are then able to add facts, events or other multimedia to the family record.  Later, when viewing either spouse, you will be able to see the information that was added to the family record.

What's next?
By this point, you should know the basics of using PhpGedView.  As you can see, performing basic tasks is quite easy.  You've probably also noticed that there are a number of other options available.  There's no rush to learn everything right now.  Feel free to look at other tutorials in the Learning Center if you're anxious to learn more right now.  A good next step would be to look at some of the PhpGedView Charts.
